Glaucoma

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is caused by excessive pressure in the eyes that destroys the nerves and fibers that make up the optic nerve. The optic nerve relays all information from the brain to the eyes. Glaucoma is progressive and irreversible, but treatment can slow progress.

What Causes Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is caused by elevated pressure inside of the eyes. Without normal drainage, the eyes can accumulate fluid and cause pressure on the optic nerve. It's also possible to get glaucoma without elevated pressure. Routine eye exams by an optometrist are needed to detect any signs of glaucoma.

Who Is at Risk of Glaucoma?

Any person can develop glaucoma, but certain factors can increase the risk. These include being of Asian or African American descent, older age, high blood pressure, diabetes, circulatory issues, thin corneas, or other underlying health conditions.

What Are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

Frequent eye exams are necessary because glaucoma presents no initial symptoms at the onset. However, common symptoms include eye pain, blurry vision, nausea, pain, and vomiting as it progresses. Other symptoms include loss of peripheral vision or distorted vision.

How Does an Optometrist Detect Glaucoma?

An eye doctor will examine the interior of your eye to detect any changes to the optic nerve. We will use a tool called a tonometer to measure the pressure of your eyes. These routine tests help us to determine any troubling vision symptoms.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Glaucoma?

Damage from glaucoma cannot be reversed, but the condition can be controlled through prescription eye drops and medication. There are also surgical interventions to improve drainage. We can fit you with unique frames to aid with light sensitivity.

Can Glaucoma Be Prevented?

It's essential to have excellent overall health to prevent glaucoma. An active lifestyle that avoids smoking, weight control, and keeping blood pressure and diabetes under control helps limit the possibility of developing glaucoma.
